Synopsis
A feature-length documentary about the life and legacy of Donald Goines — “The Godfather of Ghetto Realism.”
A Detroit native and prolific novelist who in the 1970’s wrote 16 novels in five years, Goines remains “America’s #1 Best Selling Black Author” according to his publisher.
His 50 year old unsolved murder just adds to the mystery of a man who was also a high school dropout; Korean War veteran; junkie; thief, pimp, and ex-con. Above all else, he has come to be a literary icon to countless incarcerated young men and women throughout the country, who if not for discovering Goines’ novels might not ever have learned to read.

The Books
The Novels Behind the Legend
Goines’ writing began in prison after reading Iceberg Slim’s “Pimp.” After his 1969 parole, his Holloway House paperbacks made him a voice for a new generation — later honored in the rhymes of Tupac, Nas, and 50 Cent.
