Tape’s Story
Six short clips, in the order they ran on the original Detroit King Tape site.
The Story
Detroit King Tape came up on the east side of Detroit, where the hustle started early. He was selling paper ninja stars to classmates for a quarter apiece before the streets taught him harder lessons. The name came from being meticulous, and the street years that followed included time in federal prison. Behind the walls he read Donald Goines and found the first sign that something better was waiting.
Music came first. He pushed his 2006 CD King of Detroit on billboards across the city and built his own label, Deal Witt It Records, out of Industry Sound Studio downtown. The Real Detroit 1-8-7, Plug Motivation, The Difference and Motown: The Lost Files followed.
“I realized that to end the continual cycle of chaos, I had to change my life to change my outcome.”Detroit King Tape, to Rap Therapy
That change became The Hustle Code, a self-published playbook of the rules he lives by, followed by The Stressed Out Billionaire. Now based in Los Angeles, he is also an executive producer of Detroit Son’s documentary The Donald Goines Story, about the author whose books first gave him hope. That makes three lanes: music, books and film, with his Nature’s Flex herbal supplement line carrying the same discipline into health.
